FINDING THEME
-A theme is à a literary work’s message about life.
-A theme is found by à questioning (see
below) and analyzing the essential elements of a narrative (plot, conflict,
characters, setting, point of view, etc.).
-A theme must be universal
à
meaning that it must apply to anyone, anywhere, at any time and does not include the names of the
characters or the setting.
-A theme is not
one word. à A theme is a sentence declaring one of the author’s
messages about life.
-One literary work can contain multiple themes.
THE TWO BROTHERS by Leo Tolstoy
Plot/Conflict 1. What conflicts do the character’s
face? 2. How are the conflicts
resolved?
1. One conflict the characters face is their disagreement about
whether to go on a potentially dangerous journey through forest to find
happiness after reading a message on a stone. The elder brother does not want
to go because he worries about getting lost, being “seized” by a she-bear,
and whether the journey is worth the unknown happiness. On the other hand, the younger brother does
want to make the journey because he “does not want to be seen as afraid of
anything,” he believes the message on the stone has a purpose, and because he
believes that success stems from effort.
2. This conflict is resolved when the younger brother embarks on the
journey and the elder brother does not.
The elder brother went off to live a safe life in a village while the
younger brother completed the journey and was rewarded by being named king of
the city. After being run out of the
city by another king years later, the younger brother visited the older
brother’s house. Each brother shared
his story and both found happiness with the decision they made on that day.
1. Another conflict the characters face is a character vs. self
conflict. Both brothers needed to make
a decision to embark on the journey.
Before they made their decisions,
each brother had to ask himself: Is the reward worth the risk? Should I believe the message on the
rock? Should I risk my safety for
happiness?
2. This conflict is resolved when both characters share with each
other why they should or shouldn’t go on the journey. The elder brother discusses the danger the
journey presents while the younger brother embraces the challenge. The younger brother decides to go on the
journey while the older brother stays behind.
Other conflicts: younger brother vs. river, bear, mountain (vs. nature) à younger brother vs. king (vs. character)

Setting
1.Describe the setting of The Two
Brothers. 2. How does the setting
influence the characters? 3. How does
the setting affect the conflicts? 4.
What might the setting represent?
1. The Two Brothers takes place in a forest. In the forest, there is a river and a
mountain. While it is not detailed,
the younger brother spent five years in a city on top of the mountain where
he ruled as king and the eldest brother lived in a village.
2. The setting influences the characters in that it is a place where
both characters are spending time together on a journey. The fact that they fall asleep in the
forest shows that they are comfortable there. The danger the setting could possible
present, such as the “broad and swift” river, the risk of stealing a cub from
its mother, and the challenge of climbing a mountain affects their decision
to go on the unknown journey. The
possible danger the setting presents reflects each brother’s personality. It forces each brother to ask themselves
what length they would go to find happiness.
In turn, this decision affects the next six years of the brothers’
lives
3. The setting affects the conflict (disagreement) between the two
brothers. The possible danger the river,
bears, and mountain present to the two brothers is the reason for the
brothers’ conflict. The potential
risks that nature presents forces the two brothers to share their opinions
about whether they should or should not embark on the journey.
4. The forest (river, animal life, mountain) represents life
challenges and risk. Just as the
brothers faced the challenges that nature presented, we are faced with
challenges in our daily lives. How we
approach these challenges and risks can affect our lives, just as each
brother’s decision affected their lives for the next six years.
