Period 2-3
Objectives:
-I understand how to write a good quality first body paragraph for the Social Studies Essay.
-I can identify the parts required in the body paragraph of the Social Studies Essay.

1.  Turn to the writing section of your English binder.
-Copy the notes I write on the board.  You will use these notes to write and/or revise your first body paragraph.

-Let's take a look at the model essay:  Social Studies Essay Notes

-Come up to the SMART board to highlight key parts of the first body paragraph.

-Highlight your copy of the model essay so you can refer back to it when you're writing.

2.  You will type your first body paragraph.  If you've already written yours, you will revise it to make sure it has all of the required parts we discussed.

Period 5-6

Do Now:
1.  Get your journal, turn to a clean page and write today's date.
2.  Answer the following:
        -If you were going to write a creepy story, how might you begin it?  Write down the beginning of a scary story.  (You need at least one paragraph.)
        -Make a prediction about what will happen next in "The Landlady."
SSR (10 minutes)

Objective:
I can retell a short story.
I can identify examples of foreshadowing and make predictions.

Today we will use the Elements of Literature textbook to learn about retelling and read the short story, "The Landlady," by Roald Dahl.

Read "The Landlady," p.71 in Elements of Literature; stopping to practice summarizing and retelling smaller parts of the story.
 Discuss foreshadowing.
 Discuss predictions.

Begin writing your retelling using the Retelling guide we used for "The Wise Old Woman" retelling.

We will spend two days on this activity.  Your complete retelling is due tomorrow at the end of class for a project/quiz grade.
