with the adults gone, true personalities begin to come out, for better or for worse, and many characters turn hostile Shortly after the adults disappeared, children of various ages begin to do things they would not have been able to do with adults, like teachers, around. For example, after the mysterious disappearance “kids poured out of the school” in the middle of the school day because no teechers or administrators were present to keep them in the building. Without the adults, true personalities begin to come out. Some of those personalities are good. Although Sam and his friends want what is best for all of the children of perdido beach, it is clear that the more sinister characters will be standing in his way.
