Period 2-3
Introduction To Unit:
1.  Students will be given a few minutes to look at the pictures they brought into class.
(Students were already asked to bring in a picture of someone who is considered a "freak" i.e. someone in The Guinness Book of World Records or Ripley's Believe It Or Not)
2. Students will write a diary entry in their journals from the POV of the person in the picture they brought in.
3. Students can share the diary entries.  We will use this as a springboard for a conversation to transition into Freak The Mighty.
4. Materials to use throughout this unit will be distributed (packet containing study guide questions, vocabulary work, reading assignment sheet, extra activities center work, and the Nonfiction Assignment Sheet). 
5. Go over the materials in the packet

HW: SSR; scan through chapters 1 & 2 of Freak The Mighty


Period 5-6
SSR (10 minutes)

Objectives:  I can write a complete retelling of the short story, "The Wise Old Woman," by Yoshiko Uchida.

Today we will use the Elements of Literature textbook to learn about retelling and read the short story, "The Wise Old Woman," by Yoshiko Uchida.

Discuss what retelling is and how to do it.

Go over the Retelling Rating Guide

Read "The Wise Old Woman," by Yoshiko Uchida stopping to practice summarizing and retelling smaller parts of the story.

Begin writing your retelling.

We will spend two days on this activity.  Your complete retelling is due tomorrow at the end of class for a project/quiz grade.

Homework: SSR & Finish copying the first two paragraphs of "The Wise Old Woman" retelling.
